Tate Donovan est un réalisateur et acteur américain né le 25 septembre 1963 à Tenafly dans le New Jersey. Il est le fils d'un chirurgien à la retraite et est le benjamin d'une famille de 5 enfants. Il commence sa carriere à l'adolescence dans plusieurs téléfilms comme Not my kid (1985) et dans la mini série Nutcracker: Money, Madness & Murder. Pour se rapprocher du cinéma, il s'installe à Los Angeles et obtient des rôles dans les films Clean and sober (1988) où il incarne un toxicomane, Memphis Belle (1990), ou encore Love Potion No. 9 (1992) dans le rôle principal aux côtés de Sandra Bullock.
Il a épousé Corinne Kingsbury, le 26 Novembre 2005.
